Anaesthesia is much more commonly performed in our patients than in people, not only for surgical and medical interventions, but also for diagnostic imaging and treatments. For example, we can’t just ask our patients to keep still while we run an MRI scan! Animals may be anxious in a hospital environment and when receiving a treatment that they do not understand. The anaesthesia service focuses on maintaining safety and comfort during these procedures, helping to reduce patient stress while the clinicians carry on with their job.
Services we offer:
Individual anaesthetic management
Not all referral practices employ a specialist anaesthetist, but we believe that for the cases that we see the input of a specialist anaesthetist is invaluable. There is no single anaesthetic protocol that is appropriate for all patients and circumstances. At SCVS each patient is evaluated individually in order to receive a tailored plan, identify risks and anticipate potential complications, so that our patients can have the best possible care. A dedicated member of the nursing team follows the patient during the whole procedure, carefully monitoring from induction to recovery, ensuring the maximum possible safety and comfort for each patient.
We have a variety of options regarding acute and chronic pain relief, from local analgesia to systemic drugs, acupuncture and physiotherapy. We also run a pain clinic by appointment for challenging cases that need more complex management of analgesia.
Practical advice for general practioners
Our anaesthesia specialist is available for practical advice to general practitioners on sedation, anaesthesia and analgesia and can be contacted by phone or email.
