Neurology & neurosurgery

The neurology department benefits from our three state-of-the-art operating theatres, electrodiagnostic equipment, in-house high-field MRI and CT scanners to diagnose and treat neurological conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles of cats and dogs. Meet the team.

All of our neurology cases receive comprehensive 24 hour care from our dedicated and highly-skilled nursing staff. Unlike many other referral centres we have qualified physiotherapists on-site who play a vital role in rehabilitating patients following surgery. In addition we are the only private referral centre in the UK with both an MRI guided neuronavigation system (Brainsight 2) and a highly specialised ultrasonic surgical aspirator (SonoCure). Using Brainsight we are able to obtain minimally invasive brain biopsies in order to achieve an exact diagnosis of lesions identified on MRI. Furthermore brain turmours that would previously have been inoperable due to their deep location can be removed using the Brainsight neuronavigation system.

The SonoCure is used in the management of soft tissue, brain and spinal cord tumours. Using the SonoCure which is able to fragment tumour tissue, removal of all abnormal tissue is more likely to be achieved, whilst minimising damage to surrounding vital structures.

Typical conditions we can help with include:

  • Encephalitis and/or meningitis (inflammation or infections of the brain and meninges)

  • Seizures

  • Brain tumours (cancer)

  • Brain infarcts (stroke)

  • Brain malformations (hydrocephalus, caudal occipital malformation syndrome with associated syringohydromyelia)

  • Vestibular disease (balance problems)

  • Intervertebral disc disease (slipped disc)

  • Vertebral fractures and luxations (spinal fractures)

  • Spinal cord tumours (cancer)

  • Fibrocartilaginous embolism (spinal cord stroke)

  • Myelitis (inflammation or infections of the spinal cord)

  • Wobbler syndrome

  • Diseases of muscles or nerves (myopathies or neuropathies)

  • Myasthenia gravis

"Dear Harry scott and all of the neurolgy team at couthern counties. I wanted to write this letter to thank all neurology team nurses and staff for all your care and help with my puppy Mishka (Chihuahua) who was referred to you last month.

Mishka is my first ver puppy and after such a tragic accident I couldn't have wished for her to have been in better hands.

Your staff were very helpful with all aspects of her accident including paperwork and helping me understand her injury, not only were all your team professional but it gave me great confidence knowing that every time I phoned to see how she was doing all the nurses and staff knew who she was and were very detailed in how things were.

It was so nice to feel you all cared for Mishka like she was your own and as she is such a nervous little dog all the love and care she was given by your nurses really helped her to recover.

She has bounced back to her normal self and is currently doing really well and we're very much hoping that no more seizures will occur.

Your practice is outstanding not only is it very clean and tidy but also very welcoming and the staff you have during the day and night shifts are all professional and very caring people.

I would recommend Southern Counties to anyone."
