Oncology is the study and treatment of tumours.
At SCVS we offer multiple diagnostic techniques to assist diagnosis and staging of tumours. Our medical oncology team is here to guide and explain diagnostic procedures to pet owners.
Diagnostic facilities offered on site include:
Ultrasonography, often used as the first line test to identify masses and assist sampling (fine needle aspirates or trucut biopsies)
CT scan, with the possibility to obtain CT guided biopsies
MRI particularly useful for brain, spinal or nerve sheath tumours
Once a diagnosis of tumour is established and its extension has been assessed, our medical oncology team is here to explain treatment options to pet owners. A big part of our clinicians’ job is to listen to an owner’s expectations and understand the circumstances of each patient to make sure that a tailored treatment is put in place. Before starting any treatment, side effects and costs of every treatment option are explained to the owner. The priority for our clinicians is to prioritise quality of life over quantity and offer to every client the treatment that is most appropriate for them and their pet.
The diagnosis and management of many tumours involves surgery and at SCVS the soft tissue, orthopaedic and neurosurgery services work closely with the internal medicine service to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for each patient. In appropriate cases, tertiary referral for radiotherapy can also be arranged.
