24 hours a day, 365 days of the year
Why refer to Southern Counties Veterinary Specialists?
Our mission is to work with you to provide accessible state-of-the-art compassionate specialist care for your clients' pets. Our philosophy is to treat our clients and patients in the same way that we would wish to be treated ourselves. SCVS offers a seamless referral service with world class treatment that is second to none.
24 Hour care
We have separate air conditioned dog and cat wards that are staffed 24 hours a day every day of the year by qualified veterinary nurses and veterinary interns. Our interns who usually have one or two years' of experience in private practice before joining us are on the premises 24 hours a day to support the nursing and specialist teams. Our phones are answered around the clock and priority is always given to emergency cases.
We have a large multidisciplinary team of recognised veterinary specialists. This is especially valuable in more complex cases where several body systems may be involved requiring input from more than one specialist discipline. All of our disciplines are headed by recognised specialists in their fields who have trained in a variety of locations around the world bringing together a wealth of knowledge and experience.
Innovative procedures and solutions
We have pioneered a number of treatments in the UK including hip replacement in cats and small breed dogs and canine disc arthroplasty for Wobbler syndrome. We are currently the only private referral centre in the UK with a SonoCure (ultrasonic surgical aspirator) and 3D stereotactic neuronavigation system.
As far as we are aware SCVS is still the only referral centre in the UK that has the confidence to guarantee some of its procedures. We can't guarantee that surgery will be free of complications but we are so confident of our low complication rate that for certain procedures we guarantee that we will treat all complications relating directly to the procedure free of charge. TPLOs are guaranteed in this way for 12 months and total hip replacements are guaranteed for life if the client returns to us annually for re-examination and radiographs. We know of other referral centres where clients have ended up paying more than the original fee just to treat complications. This gives referral practice a bad reputation and we feel that this is unfair and unacceptable.
Advanced diagnostic imaging
SCVS has some of the most advanced diagnostic facilities in the UK including two top of the range ultrasound scanners, 64 slice CT with cardiac gating software and a Hallmarq veterinary specific 1.5 Tesla MRI which is a world first. More importantly interpretation is performed by our on-site diagnostic imaging specialists who work closely with all of our referral services.
Insurance claims and fixed price procedures
We are happy to make direct insurance claims for your clients and unlike most referral centres we do not make a charge for this service or ask for a large deposit before proceeding with treatment. We offer a fixed price for some procedures (TPLO's and joint replacements) which include free follow up consultations and radiographs so that your client is not exposed to any hidden charges. We are transparent with our prices (we were the first referral centre in the UK to publish a price list on our website) and will always strive to achieve the best possible treatment and outcome for the patient while not exceeding the client's ability to pay.
We are happy to give advice about cases by phone even if these are not subsequently referred. We also offer a free x-ray film and ECG reading service (there is a small charge for written reports). We regularly produce a newsletter to keep you informed of our services and there are downloadable information sheets on our website. We offer frequent free CPD events for veterinary surgeons and nurses on a variety of topics (please check under CPD on the website) and you are always welcome to visit us or come along and 'see-practice'.
